Sad news -- OSLF has permanently closed down
We are very sad to announce that OSLF is permanently shutting down its operations, effective immediately.
2008 has been an extremely difficult year for OSLF, for both financial and personal reasons. Like other non-profits, OSLF has felt the economic hardships of the nation in respect to our fundraising efforts, and OSLF had to temporarily suspend funding operations three times due to low fund availability. Although we have continually been amazed and grateful for the extraordinary generosity of our donors, many of you, too, have needed to cut back, and our various fundraising events only brought in enough to enable us to limp forward. In addition, there has been a 'perfect storm' of personal matters for the Board Members that cut deeply into any available time and the ability to face the increasing challenges. The decision to close was not an easy one and one which we have all finally reached with much sadness.
OSLF started off in the spring of 2005 as a dream to help dogs lead healthier, happier lives. We modeled our non-profit offering as a last-chance funding aid — both for service dogs' medical expenses and essential orthopedic treatments for rescue and low-income companion dogs. We felt a great responsibility toward OSLF donors and all our applications were carefully reviewed and vetted. Working as volunteers, we were able to extend the funds to their maximum reach, ensuring all the proceeds were used effectively for OSLF Pets In Need. We are extremely proud that our supporters helped OSLF assist over 100 happy dogs, paying out over $60,000 in veterinary care expenses in both the US and Canada. Together, we were all able to change the lives of over 100 dogs and their caregivers, for the better.
In the upcoming days and weeks, we will be taking care of various business matters, and deciding how to best distribute whatever funds remain. We will maintain a minimal website for an indefinite period of time, and will continue to have a CafePress store through the end of 2008, to allow supporters the time to purchase contest calendars.

Every organization has its own guidelines and limitations for assistance -- you'll need to check with each to determine whether your circumstance fits within their guidelines.
